Future Mining

Alyssum Montanum a plant that accumulates nickel from the ground, cleans the sites and lives off the metal. This process is called phytomining and is done by hyper accumulators, such as alyssum montanum. Despite not being able to replace industrial mining in its entirety, it can contribute to the process. When the leaves of the plant are burned, 5 kg of the ashes contain 1 kg of nickel. With the “future mining” installation, I recreated a nickel accumulation factory for the alyssum montanum plant. I passed by a bankrupt hookah lounge and collected the pipes and coal heater baskets. The diameter of 15 cm of the pipes and baskets was my guideline and runs as a “pink” thread through my installation. Pink is the colour the testing solution turns when objects contain nickel, and my favourite colour.
